Recently, Paul McCartney premiered the music video to his latest song, "My Valentine," at an event hosted at the Los Angeles boutique of his daughter, Stella McCartney. This beautiful and emotional music video was directed by McCartney himself and it stars Johnny Depp and Natalie Portman.
As you will see in the video, Depp and Portman are beautifully articulating the lyrics to the McCartney song through sign language. Depp, not only doess sign language but he plays a little acoustic guitar solo in one long shot. For Portman, this is the second time that she has appeared in a McCartney music video (the first time was in McCartney's 2007 video to the song, "Dance Tonight").
There are actually three videos to the song. One video features Portman, one with Depp and this full video had the footages of both the actors' videos cut and made it into one. McCartney said that Stella inspired the visuals for the music video. "My Valentine" is from McCartney's latest album, "Kisses on the Bottom," which is McCartney's fifteenth studio record.
McCartney called in some heavy Hollywood talent to assist him with the production of the three videos. Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister ("The Dark Knight," "Inception") came in to do the visuals, Susanne Preissler produced the music video and Paul Martinez edited it. The video was shot in black and white and it was a great choice to go with that format because it made the video (along with the song) very heart-warming and intimate.
I also want to mention that McCartney and company did a wonderful job with the close-ups of Depp and Portman by showing their real emotions from their hands, faces and eyes while performing it. You can also see by the close ups of Portman where she's mimicking the words to the song while performing it through sing language. I just can't say enough how much I was touched and moved by this music video.
What are your thoughts on Paul McCartney's "My Valentine" music video?
