Johnny Depp will play Tonto, Native American sidekick to the Lone Ranger, in an upcoming movie. He is even closer to his character now that the Comanche Nation Indian tribe of New Mexico has formally adopted him.

The Tonto character is a member of the tribe, and Depp himself has some Native American heritage in his family tree. The Comanche Nation invited him to become a member, and he accepted.

The new movie version of The Lone Ranger, which was a popular TV show, is being helmed by Gore Verbinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, who previously worked with Depp on the mega-smash Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. If this first film is successful, you can bet it will spawn several sequels.

The Lone Ranger will be out in theaters May 31st, 2013. Do you think Depp will make a good Tonto?
