Although originally published in 2011, it wasn’t until this year that Fifty Shades of Grey burst into the mainstream and gave a lasting effect.
Everyone was reading it, from celebrities and housewives, to students, and eventually men – no doubt to see what all the fuss was about!
Surely, E L James couldn’t believe her luck; her book was seen in the hands of everyone, everywhere with the hype only growing.
It became the fastest selling paperback of all time, even beating the Harry Potter series.

Despite it breaking many records, the book was criticised for being poorly written but was similarly praised for its impact and being in a class of its own.
The book originally started out as Twilight fan fiction, but when it became successful, James decided to make it a book of its own and removed it from fan fiction websites.
It was then made into the three books Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed.
The books have been so successful that there is thought to be a film adaptation going ahead in the near future, with much speculation as to who will play the lead characters.
E L James has also worked with sex toy retailer, Lovehoney, to create the Fifty Shades of Grey Official Collection which launched in November with great success.
