With the summer blockbuster movie rush upon us, with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opening next weekend (already with an overseas box office haul of $132 million and counting), this was the perfect weekend for the Cameron Diaz-led, Nick Cassavetes-directed revenge rom-com The Other Woman to open, as it managed to topple Captain America: The Winter Soldier off the top spot, bringing in a strong $24.7 million, proving that women in leading roles (Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton) are bankable and can open movies to strong numbers.
THE OTHER WOMAN (FOX)
Captain America: The Winter Soldier in its fourth week came in second place with $16.2 million, bringing the franchise to a staggering $225 million in ticket sales so far, comfortably passing the $170 million film budget.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER (MARVEL)
In a strong third place at $14.35 million in its second week of release was surprise hit, Heaven is for Real, the faith-based movie starring Greg Kinnear. With a modest budget of $12 million, the film has already brought in $52.46 million.
Fox’s animated Rio 2 starring Anne Hathaway, slid into fourth place with $13.8 million in its third week of release, bringing its total take to date to $96.4 million.
Relativity’s Brick Mansions which stars the late Paul Walker opened in fifth place with $9.5 million. With a film budget of $28 million, the studio won’t be happy with those opening numbers.
Warner Bros.Transcendence starring Johnny Depp fared no better in its second week of release, limping into sixth place with just $4.2 million bringing its two week total to $18.6 million. With an original budget of about $100 million, Transcendence represents another flop for Depp, following The Lone Ranger.
