The recent Wilkinson (Wilko) UK TV Ad certainly has got piratical tendencies, when it starts to misplace the English lexicon by over 200 years!
I’ll digress by explaining the concept of Wilkinson’s’ TV Ad profile, Time is circa 1730′S when King George II Royal Navy often hired Pirates as Privateers to bolster their presence in the Caribbean.
The Ad concept is that there’s two rival Pirate ships, the names of which are not shared with the audience, as a game of “one-upmanship” one Pirate Capitan decides to decorate his ship, so off he cruises, (no that’s the wrong word ~ images of the camp Captain Jack Sparrow attire of actor Johnny Depp) – er sails, yes sails to a Wilkinson store to buy home decorating supplies to smarten up the Pirate Captain’s cabin, paid-for by about a dozen Gold Doubloons, strewn onto the checkout rubber belt, with Pirate Bravado.
The reveal punch-line to this ad is delivered by the rival pirate captain when he visits the sea-cabin as “Ooh Very Snazzy” he says, Lexicographers will know that Snazzy was first used in 1901 in the New Zealand Wellington Post, and since the correct time-line for the Snazzy comment should have been circa 1730 the Where there’s a Wilko, there’s a way concept is out by 300 years AND Over-priced by £2000.
A casual calculation of weight of 12 Gold Doubloons x price of gold of makes the Wilko shopping come to a shocking £2100 – for about £100 of decorating items, no wonder Wilkinson’s are thinking of piracy to promote their high-street presence!
