Its taken a while, but the first trailer for Dark Shadows has finally been released. Created by Dan Curtis, it began as a gothic soap opera in the 1960s. It introduced the Collins family, including cursed vampire Barnabas Collins, and transformed day time TV with story lines involving ghosts, werewolves and zombies. Tim Burton has now taken the reigns, in yet another collaboration with Johnny Depp, to bring Dark Shadows to the big screen.

In 1752, Barnabas Collins (Depp) breaks the heart of obsessed witch Angelique (Eva Green), is cursed into becoming a vampire and buried alive. He is discovered in 1972 and returns to his family mansion to live with his descendants, headed up by matriarch Elizabeth (Michelle Pfeiffer). It's not long before Angelique catches up with him, and his new family is put at risk.

The trailer shows that while the film keeps the dark, gothic elements that made the original series so successful, it infuses it with more comedic elements; particularly Barnabas' attempts to get used to the changes in the world he now finds himself in. It comes across as Addams Family-esque with the dark family contrasting with the bright, outside world. Depp has proved to be a talented character actor countless times in the past, and it looks like his performance as Barnabas Collins will be just as memorable. The cast also includes Chloe Grace Mortez as sulky teenager, Crolyn, and Helena Bohnham Carter as psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman.

Dark Shadows is due to be released in UK cinemas on 11th May 2012.
