Swathed in mystery, from their gloomy electronic soundscapes, right down to their cryptic promotional material and esoteric website, enigmatic five-piece Echotape are an intriguing, albeit challenging prospect to say the least.
Their four-track debut EP, Sky Above Quarley Hill, was produced by Martin Glover, better known as Youth, bassist in legendary post-punk band, Killing Joke and there's a definite air of his 80's heyday on the record, as Echotape effortlessly recreate those same multi-layered industrial textures, adding their own euphoric modern tinge along the way. It's not all White Lies inspired monochrome indie-tronica however, as 'Black And White', the standout track from the EP reveals an emotive pop sensibility behind their diesel fuelled post-punk exterior, as searing guitars and piston-like percussion entwine and soar skywards to a blissful crescendo.
Echotape have a string of UK dates lined up during April before travelling to LA on May 3rd to perform at the City of Angels' infamous Viper Room nightspot, founded by Johnny Depp and a former hub of Hollywood's debauched high society as well as the scene of River Phoenix's untimely death of a drug overdose on Halloween morning in 1993. We're fully expecting Echotape to join the ranks of the indie elite before long.
