Honestly, I only considered the film because I was a fan of the original 21 Jump Street with Johnny Depp. (Not that I need to explain my actions to anyone). However, I will say I was pleasantly pleased with this silly version of the story.
What surprised me the most was that Jonah Hill was attached to the flick in more ways then as an actor. He not only co-wrote the screenplay but also is the executive producer. Good for him. Also, Johnny Depp and Richard Grieco (original cast of 21 Jump Street) made surprise appearances in the film but were not listed in the credits as doing so.
Anyway, past the trivia, I laughed a whole lot of times thanks to a smart script. A good dialogue always makes for a solid comedy even if the synopsis is cheesy.
The cheesy synopsis is about two high school losers who enroll in the same police academy and while going through training become the best of friends. However, during a drug bust, they screw up and are forced to become undercover cops at the same high school they attended years back. Except this time, things have changed and so has their popularity and status with the new crowd.
My suggestion, rent the film and bypass paying an arm and a leg to see it in the movie theater. Just be sure to supervise your children if you plan to make it a family movie night.
