'Down in the tube station at midnight' was a great song by a band called The Jam, from back in the early 80s I think. However, being down in the tube station at midnight is not so much fun, especially if you're young and female. A very stressful evening had finished yesterday and someone inevitably said 'Let's celebrate survival with a drink!'. And so it was that I found myself wandering the labyrinthine tunnels of The Underground. Orpheus, Hades is nothing compared to this. Still, I was in the company of two hunky guys. It was just my luck that Dion and Charles only had eyes for each other and were walking beside me hand in hand. No doubt they would have willingly laid down their lives for me but probably only after asking any would-be attacker if they could remove their very expensive Gucci Marseille suits first…
The fact I'm writing this blog today does indicate my worries were groundless about the late night journey. In fact London at that time is wonderful, you can almost feel the ghosts of past inhabitants going about their chores and business. There's a book in that idea, for sure.
So, no writing yesterday. Maybe tonight as my timetable suggests a more straightforward day. I'm feeling a pull back to my playscript. I get ideas floating into my mind, scribble them down on pieces of paper and store them away for later reflection. They're not always on my present project, which can be a pain. The last time I worked on the playscript a visiting friend read through a scene or two and declared it was "a cross between Gormenghast and Bleak House, only a shade darker". I think that's a compliment, I'm still working it out. But I've already pencilled in Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter to play the leads in the movie adaptation and Tim Burton to direct. Well, no harm in aiming high!
