Herb Ritts

If you find yourself in LA between now and the end of August (finishes 26th) PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE take the time and head over to the Museum at the J.Paul Getty Centre for an exhibition of one of the most celebrated and talented photographers there  has ever been (& I don't say that gently), Herb Ritts. Ritts was an LA based photographer who came to prominence in the late 70′s and was famed for his ability to bridge the gap between art & commerce within his work, he worked right up until his untimely death in 2002.

This is an exhibition you will NEVER find yourself bored at, we not talking painting of objects you can't recognise or pieces where you have no clue what they were on about. This is pure, unadulterated beautiful photographs, whether you are straight, gay, bi whatever, sexuality has nothing to do with these images, the man who took them was simply a genius and knew exactly what to do to get the most out of his subject and in turn, his subjects wholeheartedly trusted him and so he was able to get them to do the most amazing of poses.

You will, if you are lucky enough to attend, recognise much of Ritt's work and subjects, including Kate Moss, Mark Walhberg, Madonna, Helena Christensen, Jack Nicholson, Johnny Depp, Cindy Crawford, The late Michael Jackson, Nicole Kidman and Britney Spears the list goes on and on. But also, it was his portrait work which is probably the most emotive of his back catalogue as he was able to capture the real person, without sounding a bit of a tosser.

The exhibition doesn't limit itself to just the photographs of Herb Ritts it includes a selection of Ritts's vintage prints, magazine covers, Polaroids, and commercial video projects.
