The first full trailer for The Lone Ranger was released today, and while I never thought I’d say this, it seems as though Johnny Depp as Tonto may be the weakest part of the movie. Don’t believe me? Just listen to his accent and try to imagine putting up with that for a full two hours.

Look, you won’t find a bigger Johnny Depp fan than me, but this is part of a disturbing trend. Known for creating memorable and eccentric personalities on screen such as Edward Scissorhands, Cry-Baby and Ed Wood, he’s gotten too weird and too campy, to the point where it seems like some of his recent performances are simply caricatures of his more iconic roles.

The two biggest culprits of this, in recent years, are Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland. Even if he lost the creepy Julian Assange haircut, Depp’s Willy Wonka would never be allowed within 200 ft of any child unless there was some sort of supervisor present. Actually, you could kind of say the same thing about the Mad Hatter. But either way, both characters were too over-the-top. At some point Depp went from cool weird to well, just weird.

Maybe it was unfair to expect him to transcend two of the most memorable children’s tales of all time (with a third — Tonto — on the way). Maybe Tim Burton is as much as fault (if not more) for seemingly losing directorial touch (although Tim Burton isn’t involved with The Lone Ranger). Maybe he’s suffering from Adam Sandler syndrome — making terrible, “kid friendly” movies that feature a watered-down version of what made him great. Or maybe I’m just reading too much into a two and a half minute trailer.

Our suggestion? Ditch the makeup for a movie or two. Not every character you play has to be a “character,” for lack of a better word. Take a cue from Tom Cruise, who (at least for a short time) was able to make everyone forget about the whole Oprah couch-jumping debacle with an appearance in Tropic Thunder that was totally out of left field for him. Re-watch some of your classics like Donnie Brasco, Fear and Loathing in Las Veas, and The Ninth Gate. You don’t always have to play cartoon characters, Johnny Depp.
