Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is heating up the weekend box office, even though it isn’t performing quite as well as its predecessor.
The Scorch Trials in the second installment in the popular YA book-film franchise. The first movie adaptation, The Maze Runner, opened to $32.5 million last year. Now the sequel is expected to debut at $30.3 million.
Still, that’s a highly respectable number, and more than enough to secure the number one spot in this weekend’s Top 10. Black Mass, which stars Johnny Depp as crime boss Whitey Bulger, looks to have a lock on second with $24.8 million. There’s then a big drop to third place, with The Visit scaring up less than half that amount if its total stays at $11 million.
Last weekend’s chart-topper, The Perfect Guy, is expected to fall to the fourth position with an estimated $9.9 million. Everest, which is getting Jake Gyllenhaal some Oscar buzz, is predicted to open in the five spot with $7 million. It may be followed by the Christian film War Room, thanks to a potential $6.6 million in box office receipts.
$2.9 million in ticket sales is all it would take for A Walk In The Woods to secure seventh place. Possibly rounding out the Top 10 are Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation ($2.4 million), Straight Outta Compton ($1.9 million), and Captive ($1.9 million). All figures are currently estimates, and Gossip Cop will have updates. TELL US: What are YOU seeing this weekend?
