My God it's been a slow month. After the dizzying delights of April, May has settled into somewhat of a rut as it spurts out forgettable product after forgettable product without much exception.

This month we've been passingly entertained by the likes of Safe, Silent House, The Lucky One, How I Spent My Summer Vacation, Moonrise Kingdom and Snow White and the Huntsman, and driven near-mad by dismal disasters such as Damsels in Distress, Dark Shadows and The Dictator.

Not that there haven't been highlights, of course. May delivered the occasional stand-out movie that at least began to sate cinemagoers looking for more than Johnny Depp or kooky quirkiness. American Reunion was nowhere near as bad as it could have been, The Raid was as visceral an action movie as you could ever hope for, Men In Black III improved upon its predecessor and Iron Sky delivered on its premise of Nazis in space. And then some.

This month I also wrote about the common ground Buffy the Vampire Slayer shares with Joss Whedon's The Avengers for ScreenGeek, attended the programme launch for the 66th annual Edinburgh International Film Festival for HeyUGuys and began a new feature on this blog highlighting each week's scheduled DVD releases.

But it has nevertheless been a slow month. Having just finished writing up my entry for May's BlogalongaBond (this month: Goldeneye), I am off to watch Prometheus. A number of sniffy reviews aside, I can only hope that Ridley Scott's kicks June off in style.

Film of the month: Iron Sky
