Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me. Piracy is a growing fad in our culture. Not that people are going around stealing shit and drinking rum. That would be bad. But ever since Johnny Depp donned a tricorne and eyeliner, people have been going crazy for all-things pirate. Thankfully, The Dread Crew of Oddwood is here to meet all your pirate-related needs.
Wolfdeard, Riven, Ruba Jouba, Smithy, and Castle (oh yeah, you read that right) just released Heavy Mahogany, their newest album. The guys use drums, fiddle, mandolin, and accordion to bring a pretty cool—and sometimes even funny—blend of Renaissance sound and modern metal flair. They somehow manage to make their old-school instruments sound like the guitar solos and overall awesomeness of something very new. It's all good fun and the guys can legitimately play, which is a plus. On this newest album, you can hear the limerick-based story of a night at a brothel gone wrong in "Brothel Royale" or sing the praises of eating, drinking, and wenching (notice a theme) in "Meat, Bread, and Wine." If you like what you hear, be sure to check out your local Ren Faire to see if they are performing near you; seeing them live is definitely an experience in and of itself and well worth any trek you might have to make.
